No, Grinderman 2 won’t be playing along with Saw 3D or Scream 4 at your local multiplex — it’s the new sophomore album from Grinderman, the raucous rock project of one-of-a-kind Australian musician Nick Cave and several members of his longtime band, the Bad Seeds.
And unlike many sequels, this one was necessary — a remarkably meaner-sounding victory lap around the amped-up, off-kilter sounds of the Stooges, Talking Heads and Suicide.
Reference points are rampant, to be sure, but it’s a wholly new thrill to hear this sort of in-the-red rock delivered with Cave’s singularly sinister style.
Cave brings Grinderman to Nashville on Friday, Nov. 19 for a show at the Cannery Ballroom (1 Cannery Row, 251-3020). It starts at 9 p.m., and tickets are $25 in advance, $27 on the day of the show.
